The first 5 years of my career was in a John Deere/GM dealership. I was there when the first 5.7L diesel hit the ground at the end of the 70’s. It was a quick learning curve with all the problems associated with a completely new unproven product.

We were the only GM dealer in Canada with a fuel injection repair shop. We soon learned the problems and the solutions to keep these early diesels running well. Soon dealer from as far away as Red Deer and Moosejaw were sending cars and trucks to us to diagnose and repair. In 1981 the completely new 6.2L diesel was introduced along with a completely new set of problems. We were soon knee deep in pumps sorting out the problems of both of these engines.

In 1985 I started Taber Diesel. Because of my 5 years of experience with the “new” diesel vehicle my reputation as the guy to solve the problems was cemented. Pumps arrived from GM and Ford dealers along with farm equipment dealers and independent repair shops came from all over western Canada. We were the first fuel injection shop with the experience of actually repairing vehicles rather than just seeing the pumps come over the counter which was the history of fuel injection repair for decades before.

As systems became more complex and electronic systems were introduced the independent shops really struggled to keep up. I was involved with the Association of Diesel Specialists for many years. In 2000 I worked with ADS to introduce a technical training program for the powerstroke diesel engine. I traveled around North America and put on classes for 100’s of student mechanics training them on the new systems.

I served as a chair of the mechanic advisory committee at Lethbridge College for almost 20 years. With this connection LC along with ADS sponsored and trained dozens of technicians as well as instructors at LC. Taber Diesel now had customers who really knew how to diagnose and repair these modern systems and we help supply them with the parts they needed.

From being the premier diesel pickup truck engine specialist in the 1980’s Taber Diesel evolved into the largest volume Bosch dealer in Canada. Our focus changed from vehicle service to providing customers all over Western Canada with the best products at competative prices.

Many of our best customers are some very talented independent repair shops. I made the decision that if I wanted to keep selling these customers parts and support them with the technical know-how I could not also be competing with them for the vehicle service customers. Thus our decision to close our vehicle service faciltiy.

As of 2023 Taber Diesel Services, our fuel injection repair facility is focused strictly on the repair and remanufacturing of diesel pumps and injector for all makes. TDS Auto Parts if focused on customer service for the injection business along with working to become the premier destination in Southern Alberta for all the parts you need for pickup trucks and SUV’s.
